In the 1970s, Cartier Paris is struggling. The death of Pierre Cartier in 1964 leaves the Paris branch without its spiritual leader and soul. In 1972, Robert Hocq famously purchases the Paris branch and undertakes several interesting commercial experiments to revive the Maison, including the launch of Les Musts de Cartier and the reunification of the Paris, New York and London branches
However, there is equally the shift of watchmaking to Le Chaux-de-Fonds in Switzerland from Paris and the launch of the original Louis Cartier Collection in 1973. This collection includes 12 designs inspired by some of the Maison's most distinctive creations over time: the Tank, the Normale, the Santos-Dumont, and the Baignoire.
Among the 12 is also the Ceinture. Featuring a stepped geometric case, the Ceinture was produced in far fewer qualities than say the Tank while retaining the iconic design language of Cartier: the chemin de fer minute markers, roman numeral hour markets of course, the blue cabuchon on the crown.
